I’ve seen an interesting trend among entry-level data analysts.  Many believe that after they learn data analytics skills, companies will be begging to hire them immediately and pay them 6-figure salaries.  I’ve heard many stories lately where aspiring analysts refuse to accept less than $80-100k and new analysts a few months into their first role feel underpaid making $60-80K.  So where does this expectation to make 6 figures in your first data role come from? I personally think a lot of it comes from data influencers and bootcamps who sell the unrealistic expectation that you’ll easily get a 6-figure role as a driving selling point for their paid data courses.  Have you ever seen this used as a hook on TikTok or Instagram? Ironically, the entry level analytics positions are super competitive right now because there’s a ton of people self-learning and transitioning into the field looking for their first role.  To be transparent, it isn’t easy to land a role in analytics, and it takes time to find the right fit and ace your interviews. So don’t be discouraged when companies aren’t immediately “begging” to hire you like you were told.  And don’t be discouraged or feel underpaid if your starting salary is under $80k— it’s quite realistic! I started out making less than that even with a Masters degree. The real money isn’t in your first role, it’s a few years in when you get really good at what you do! I started at a very realistic entry-level salary and have quickly grown my income as I’ve built confidence and expertise (see my salary trajectory post from a few weeks ago).  For your first role, you should most concerned about the experience and skills you will learn because that will determine the slope of your growth trajectory after that role.  I’m not saying to accept a low ball offer and just be happy with it. Always be educated on the market value— know your worth! And always negotiate EVEN IF it's an entry-level role! I’m saying that it’s important to have realistic expectations going into the job search otherwise you may miss out on some great opportunities because you’re chasing a dream you were sold.  It's completely okay (and normal) if your first data job doesn't pay close to 6 figures. Thoughts on expecting 6 figures for your first data role? #data #analytics #datascience (Inspired by a story Annie Nelson shared yesterday!)
